Location & Directions

Ruby Mountains • Elevation 6,800′ • Near Sherman Peak (10,300′)

Heads up: Please don’t trust GPS to our mailing address. In maps, search “Cowboy’s Rest” and follow the directions below. We are not on Smith Creek Road.

We’re about 60 miles south of Elko, Nevada (≈290 miles east of Reno; ≈230 miles west of Salt Lake City) at the southern end of the Ruby Mountains.

Directions from Elko (≈ 1 hr 15 min, no stops)

  1. From Elko, take NV-227 (Lamoille Hwy) southeast toward Spring Creek/Lamoille.
  2. Turn right onto NV-228 and continue south toward Jiggs/Ruby Valley.
  3. Follow signage toward the Harrison Pass area; stay on the main road over the pass.
  4. Watch for Cowboy’s Rest signs and turn into the marked entrance.
  5. Park and check in with camp staff.

Fuel up in Elko. Some stretches may be graded gravel—plan for daylight if possible.

Directions from Eureka (≈ 2–3 hrs, road-dependent)

  1. Head north from Eureka toward the Ruby Mountains (routing toward NV-278).
  2. Follow signs toward the Harrison Pass area on the west side of the Rubies.
  3. Continue over the pass; follow posted signs for Cowboy’s Rest.
  4. Turn into the marked entrance and check in with staff.

Expect highway + county/Forest Service roads; final miles may be gravel. Do not follow Smith Creek Rd.

Road & Safety Tips

  • GPS: Search “Cowboy’s Rest” (place), not our mailing address.
  • Fuel & food: Last full services in Elko (north) and Eureka (south).
  • Vehicles: Cars, vans, and buses are fine—take gravel segments slow.
  • Weather: Mountain weather changes quickly; plan for daylight arrival.
