Our Story

Cowboy’s Rest nestled below Sherman Peak in the Ruby Mountains

Cowboy’s Rest began as a simple, Spirit-led idea in the hearts of our founders, Bob and Chris Burrows. Their church family had been taking kids on campouts— and they watched something beautiful happen. Out under Nevada’s big sky, kids pitched their first tents, caught their first fish, learned to shoot a .22, and leaned in close around evening campfires for worship and the Word. Away from screens and busy schedules, God’s truth seemed to land deeper.

As the Burrows prayed, they realized northern Nevada needed a place where churches could bring students for this kind of life-changing time with God. In August 1995, Bob stepped away from pastoring in Fallon and moved the family to Elko to work in the family produce business while they searched for land. Three and a half years later, God opened the door to purchase the XJ Ranch on Sherman Creek, tucked below Sherman Peak at the south end of the Ruby Mountains—peaceful, remote, and alive with turkeys, mule deer, elk, and horses.

Since 1999, Cowboy’s Rest has welcomed thousands of campers and families through the faithful prayers and service of many. Today, the camp is managed by Jonathan & Kerri Hatt who live at the ranch year-round. The heart remains the same: create space for people to meet Jesus, grow as disciples, and make memories that last.

We trust the Bible as God’s Word.

We confess one God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—and Jesus crucified and risen for our salvation.

By grace through faith we follow Christ and serve His church until He returns.
